Literacy Block

We spend 90 minutes every day on literacy, divided into blocks that focus on enrichment/intervention, small group skill development, and whole group instruction of major standards. The small groups are differentiated to meet the targeted needs of every student.

Primary Instructional Materials

  • Wonders

Vocabulary

Vocabulary tests come from the Wonders reading program and correspond with the weekly reading selections.

Writing

Students spend 50 minutes per day on writing using the Write Now Right Now curriculum. They learn paragraph structure and how to write in informational, persuasive, and narrative forms. Grammar instruction is integrated with the Wonders reading curriculum in whole or small group settings.

Social Studies & Science

We spend 30 to 40 minutes daily alternating between social studies and science.

  • Colorado Springs History
    • Compare primary and secondary sources when explaining the past.
    • Identify how people in the past influenced the development and interaction of different communities or regions.
  • Economics
    • Explain how producers and consumers exchange goods and services in different ways.
    • Create a plan to meet a financial goal.
  • Geography: Local and Nearby States
    • Use geographic tools to develop spatial thinking skills.
    • Define the concept of region through examining similarities and differences in places and communities.
    • Create a map of the classroom including a compass rose.
    • Learn about directions in our outdoor classroom.
  • Civics
    • Respect the views and rights of others.
    • Describe the origins, structures, and functions of local government.

Science

We use the Carolina Science Curriculum covering:

  • Life cycles of plants and animals
  • Weather
  • Forces of motion

Math

Students spend 60 minutes per day on math using the IntoMath program.

  • Multiplication and division

  • Fractions
  • Multiplication fact practice

Homework

Homework is assigned weekly and due the following Friday. Each student is expected to practice math facts for at least 10 minutes and read a book for at least 20 minutes each night.

Classroom Behavior

Classroom behavior is monitored using the RULER and PBIS systems and follows our posted ROCKS expectations. We also recognize students who display exemplary character traits on a quarterly basis.
